Origins

Toto's early history, which began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's rapid economic expansion. In the beginning of its existence, the company produced goods to meet demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. It was the first tunnel kiln in the country that could produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, allowing for more efficiency and consistency.

The company began expanding internationally in the latter part of the 1980s to profit from new markets and sales opportunities. The company founded the Cera Trading Company to import and sell other products of other manufacturers in order to expand its line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and expand the firm’s global market share.

In the 1990s, Toto began to focus on research and development of water-related appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better serve the needs of customers and boost profits. The company implemented a just-in-time approach to supply chain management and used the same method for its sales process. This led to a higher level of customer satisfaction.

Toto continues to invent toilet technology. Its latest toilet has a strong, eco-friendly tornado flush. Toto also makes use of recycled water in its production process and has a green purchasing policy. And the album ends with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distorted AOR and sounds completely wrong, but actually works wonderfully well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career, and the band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It was not as popular as IV. The group managed to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.
